Betty Kim, CPA
Managing Partner, Co-Founding Partner
Betty is a founding partner of Encore Partners LLP and has over 17 years of experience in public accounting working with small, mid-sized and Fortune 500 companies providing tax compliance and consulting services. Prior to forming Encore Partners LLP, Betty was a tax manager at Ernst & Young LLP in San Diego. Betty served in leadership roles at EY, including co-chair of the Pan Asia Affinity Group, chairperson of the Working Mothers Group, served as a member for several process improvement committees, and taught several tax technical classes for National Tax.
At Ernst & Young, Betty specialized in both corporate taxation including FAS 109 provisions and in partnership taxation, working with Real Estate specific pass through entities and joint ventures. Betty was a member of the firm’s highly specialized real estate group. In addition, Betty has significant experience working with property transactions, capital gains, private equity fund investment transactions, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT’s) and state and local tax, including both state income/franchise and sales and use tax.
At Encore Partners LLP, Betty continues to serve as an advisor for many real estate companies ranging from new business startups to large public institutions by providing them with innovative and capital saving ideas to help them reach their overall tax goals. Her experience is focused on real estate operations including developers, REITs, and real estate opportunity funds. She specializes in providing REIT Compliance services of Quarterly and Annual REIT Testing for both Public and privately held REIT entities to support financial statement audits.
Betty takes an active role in assisting clients with business transactions, and has extensive tax consulting experience with partnerships, LLC’s, and corporate entities and high net worth individuals, some of which own and control a business or businesses. In addition, Betty has developed a large individual client base of highly compensated employees, assisting them in the tax implications of stock compensations and strategies to reduce or defer taxes.
Betty’s focus is on analyzing the overall impact of transactions for the present and future tax implications for both businesses and individuals as a whole, with the goal of building wealth and developing family legacies.
In the area of state taxation, Betty performs state nexus studies for multi-state service companies to minimize income and franchise tax and reduce the clients’ risk and tax exposure in multiple states. She also has assisted in numerous Sale and Use Tax audits, and in one case, she assisted a client where a large deficiency was reversed and instead the client received a refund from the state.
Betty’s public accounting experience provides her with keen insight into the resolution of any taxing authorities’ notices. She has provided numerous services of Audit representation, Offer in Compromise, Installment Agreement, Levies, Penalty Abatement, and Delinquent Returns.
Betty has provided valuable services for assisting not for profit organizations in 501(c)(3) filings, which have very difficult approval processes. And she has assisted in the formation of charitable foundations.
Betty is also a member of ProVisors, an invitation-only, highly regarded community of senior-level Trusted Advisors.
Betty enjoys cooking and spending time with her family, including her lovely daughters Allison and Yuribella.
